The short version: your Apple Health data stays on your iPhone. You can use Edgely without an account. If you make one, it backs up what you create in Edgely. Health data only leaves your iPhone if you switch on health backup or the cloud coach, and you can switch either off at any time. We don't show ads, track you or sell anything about you.
1. Who we are
Edgely is an iPhone and Apple Watch app made by Michael Dorkings, an independent developer in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"). We are the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us at support@edgely.app.
2. What stays on your iPhone
Most of Edgely runs entirely on your device. None of the following is sent to us:
- Apple Health data. With your permission, Edgely reads workouts, heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, breathing rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen, steps, activity and body measurements from Apple Health to work out your Recovery, Strain and Sleep scores, trends and workout analysis. All of that is calculated on your iPhone. We never use Apple Health data for advertising or sell it, and we don't share it with anyone except as described in sections 4 and 5, when you choose to.
- Workouts you record. Edgely writes the workouts it records (with routes, heart rate and effort) to Apple Health, as Apple's Workout app does.
- Location. GPS is used during outdoor workouts to draw your route and measure distance. Routes are saved to Apple Health and on your iPhone, not on our servers.
- Your personal details (sex, height, birthday), used to set heart rate zones and reference ranges.
- Coach chats. Conversations with the coach are saved on your iPhone only.
- Apple Intelligence. The daily briefing and the on-device coach use Apple's on-device language model. Nothing is sent to us or to another AI provider.
- Notifications are worked out and scheduled on your iPhone. No health data is sent to a server to send you a notification.
- Music. If you turn on workout music, Edgely asks for Apple Music access only to play your chosen playlist through the Music app.
Edgely contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting tools, and does not track you across other apps or websites.
3. If you make an account
An account is optional. Everything works without one. If you sign in with Apple or with your email, we keep:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address (or Apple's private relay address) and an account ID | To sign you in and keep your data with your account |
| Your name, profile photo and bio | To show your profile on your devices |
| What you create in Edgely: strength workouts, routines, custom exercises, training plans and sessions, structured runs, exercise notes, achievements and app settings | To back it up and bring it back when you sign in on a new iPhone |
| A record of when you gave or withdrew consent for health backup and the cloud coach, and the wording you agreed to | To show that consent was given, as UK GDPR requires |
| If you use the cloud coach: a daily count of requests and their size | To apply a fair-use daily limit |
Strength workouts and plans count as fitness data. Apple Health data itself (heart rate, sleep, Recovery and so on) is not part of this sync.
One account's data lives on an iPhone at a time. When you sign out, Edgely removes the synced data from that iPhone; it stays with your account and comes back when you sign in again.
4. Health backup (optional)
Health backup is off unless you turn it on in Settings › Account, after a screen that explains it. When it's on, we also back up your body measurements (weight, body fat and tape measurements) and what your coach remembers (facts you've confirmed and short summaries of recent chats). This is health data, a special category under UK GDPR, so we only keep it with your explicit consent.
Turn it off and the backup is deleted from our servers straight away. Our database refuses health records from any account that hasn't given consent.
5. The cloud coach (optional, 18+)
Edgely Pro can include a coach that runs on Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. It's only available to adults who agree to it on a screen that explains what is shared, and it's off until you do.
When you ask the cloud coach something, Edgely sends your message, today's Recovery, Sleep and Strain, and whatever the coach needs to look up to answer (for example recent workouts, sleep, lifts, plans, routines, your age, sex and height, and what it remembers about you). It goes through our server in the EU to Anthropic. Only what a reply needs is sent, and only when you ask.
We don't store your messages or the coach's replies on our server; they're saved on your iPhone. Anthropic uses the data only to answer you and doesn't use it to train its models. Like most providers, Anthropic may keep requests for a limited time for security and abuse monitoring before deleting them. Turn the cloud coach off in Settings › Account and nothing more is sent.
The coach gives training guidance, not medical advice.
6. Who processes your data
We use a small number of service providers, each under a contract that limits them to acting on our instructions:
- Supabase hosts accounts, sign-in, the database and profile photos, in the EU (Stockholm, Sweden).
- Anthropic runs the cloud coach's AI model, only if you turn it on. Anthropic processes data in the United States; transfers are covered by the safeguards in its data processing terms, such as standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum.
- Apple provides Sign in with Apple, Apple Health, the App Store and payments. Apple's own privacy policy covers what Apple does with your data.
We never sell your data or share it for advertising. We'd only disclose it if the law required us to.
7. Legal bases (UK and EU GDPR)
- Contract: running your account, syncing what you create and providing the features you ask for.
- Explicit consent: health backup and the cloud coach. You can withdraw it at any time in the app.
- Legitimate interests: keeping the service secure and applying fair-use limits.
8. How long we keep it
We keep account data for as long as you have an account. Health backup is deleted as soon as you turn it off. When you delete your account, everything we hold for it is deleted: your profile and photo, synced records, health backup, achievements, consent records and usage counts. If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke Edgely's access to your Apple ID. Data on your iPhone stays there until you delete the app.
9. Your rights and choices
You can, at any time:
- Export your data from Settings › Account › Export My Data, as one file.
- Delete your account from Settings › Account › Delete Account.
- Change what Edgely reads from Apple Health in the Health app or iPhone Settings › Privacy & Security › Health.
- Turn off health backup or the cloud coach in Settings › Account.
You also have the right to access, correct, erase or restrict your data, to object to processing and to data portability. Email support@edgely.app and we'll reply within a month. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or to your local data protection authority.
10. Children
Edgely is not directed at children under 13, and the cloud coach is for adults only (18+). If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.
11. Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Row level security in our database means each account can only reach its own data. Profile photos are kept in private storage. The key for the AI provider is kept on our server, never in the app.
12. Changes and contact
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell you in the app. Questions? Email support@edgely.app.
Edgely is not a medical device and does not give medical advice.
